Overcoming Hostel Life Challenges at College

One of the main concerns of students traveling abroad for higher education is the fact that they have to face a number of challenges while living in a hostel. A recent survey revealed that majority of high school students are willing to study abroad for a number of reasons including the worth of a particular college’s degree or experiencing cultural diversity. A number of financial aid packages and scholarships are also being offered due to which more and more people are able to study abroad.

Regardless of how simple and exciting hostel life may seem, it is not as easy. You will undoubtedly love the experience but only if you successfully overcome the challenges that students face on a daily basis in a hostel. I often had to consume external services when I paid for the hostel simply because of low quality. This forced me to save up money by buying cheap assignments online and adopting similar strategies. Following is a list of possible challenges you might face during hostel life and viable ways of overcoming those challenges:

  1. Food is the major problem: For the first few weeks, you will love the fact that you get to eat a variety of food and new taste each day. Some days you will eat from college cafeteria while you will order pizza and junk food from restaurants and fast food chains. Regardless of how tempting this sounds, you will soon find yourself disliking too much of junk food consumption. This is when you begin to miss home-cooked food and hostel life becomes difficult. The best way to overcome this challenge is by cooking food by yourself. We never ask you to cook every day because there are obviously time constraints during college but you can always cook over the weekend and save it up for consumption of approximately two or three days of the next week.

  2. Laundry issues: In some colleges, there are washing machines and dryers placed in a room where students can wash all their clothes by them but in other colleges, there is laundry services offered where students just need to give their clothes and collect washed clothes in three days or so. Although this may sound very convenient, the greatest challenge you face is damaging of clothes and losing them since they receive hundreds of clothes each day. In order to overcome this, I used to give my expensive clothes for paid dry cleaning which incurred extra cost but at least provided me with the satisfaction of clothes not being lost or damaged. You can use strategies like buying cheap assignments and avoiding extravagant spending to cover up for this extra expense.

  3. Room sharing may not be acceptable by everyone: A number of colleges randomly assign roommates, especially in the first year to increase social circle for every student. This sharing of room is necessary because individual residency is expensive. You may face challenges like a roommate not willing to compromise on anything or different sleeping hours i.e. your roommate might stay awake the whole night and refuses of switch off the lights. In this scenario, you must set specific rules on the first day of residency and agree upon them. Be willing to compromise on a few things if you want your roommate to do the same.
